The story of "thefacebook.com" was the subject of a hit movie called "The Social Network" and one thing is clear, Facebook was never intended to be a platform for you to make money. The keys to using the Social network for profit have eluded even the most persistent marketers. People don't like being bombarded by advertising and if that's all you intend to do, Facebook will not be a very useful platform for you. Its whole construction is based around shielding people from direct unwanted intrusion while at the same time collecting your information for Facebook's use which may include selling that information.
Even huge marketers such as Coca-Cola Corp have failed to really do anything with it other than have use it as an adjunct to their more traditional marketing campaigns. What is their strategy? a corporation has no real personality and is the sum of its parts as conceived of by a marketing team. Corporations use marketers to brand themselves by assigning an identity which is the most profitable to that company. To be a successful marketer on Facebook, start with the corporate strategy of assigning a personality based upon what is most profitable for your company and not necessarily a straightforward approach to presenting your products. "Meet Dusty and Michael Once upon a time, while searching for the official Coca-Cola Facebook page, a young man named Dusty discovered there wasn't one. Feeling inspired, he enlisted the help of his friend Michael, found the perfect image of a Coke and created this page. The rest, as they say, is history." - Cokes Facebook Page and.. "... just reached 25 Million likes. Dusty & Michael, the original Coke Facebook page creators, are planning to surprise their fans with a big cake." It's a personable approach that would take the talent of the top marketing company in the world to come up with. The story is attractive to the average Facebook user, encompasses the ideals of the society of the Internet yet is owned, backed, authorized and monitored by the corporation. Is the Coca-Cola Corporation really going to allow some random 30 something's with an Internet addiction to build and maintain their "Official" corporate Facebook webpage? Of course not but the idea of that possibility is certainly an attractive one. The execution of such a marketing effort is nothing short of brilliant. To successfully brand your company using Facebook, start with your customers, maintain control, stay on topic and be creative.
