The movie had some high points annnd some problems, the high points would be the supporting actors, good cinematography and the compelling marketing concept.
Unfortunately the story went in several different directions and seemed to ramble. In the style of most classic westerns, action, conflict and tension should be the focus; the love story between Jake Lonergan and his missing wife should have been enough to carry the entire film. Without touching on the myriad of other issues that the movie bumps in to, it's enough to say that this obviously fictional tale makes a confused attempt at digesting large story lines, scifi bad guys, alien abductions, religion, morality and character driven drama.
The visual effects were moderate and kept in check. On the whole I think this was more successful than Jason X where Jason Voorhees kills on a 25th century spaceship but it was not The Magnificent Seven or Return of the Jedi.
Something else that makes this film interesting is seeing several highly identifiable performers on screen together. I can't think of any occasion where this is a particularly bad idea. Though Harrison Ford is hardly a supporting character in this instance, I wish more high profile actors would consider taking supporting roles. I honestly believe that, though they draw attention from newer actors performances, exposure in supporting roles is healthy for the major actors career as well as for the stars.
